After nearly 20 years working in the fitness industry, one thing I’ve learned is that the best training program isn’t necessarily the most complicated or intense — it’s the one you can consistently stick with. That’s one of the biggest reasons I believe so strongly in group training. There’s something different about walking into a gym knowing you have a coach expecting you and a group of people ready to train alongside you. It creates accountability, energy and structure that can be difficult to replicate when you’re training on your own. You tend to show up more consistently, push yourself a little harder and get more out of your time in the gym. It doesn’t need to feel competitive or intimidating either. Sometimes simply having someone beside you working hard is enough to get that extra rep, add a little weight or finish the workout stronger than you would have alone. Over weeks, months and years, those small efforts and that consistency can make a huge difference.
I also believe there’s an important distinction between simply working out in a group and actually being coached in a group. Good group training shouldn’t mean throwing everyone into the same workout and expecting them to move at the same pace. Everyone comes in with different training experience, strength levels, injuries, mobility and goals. The overall structure of the workout can be shared while exercises, loads and progressions are adjusted to the individual. That’s what we want group training at Connect Performance to feel like. You’re part of a group, but you’re still being coached as an individual. You shouldn’t have to walk into the gym wondering what to do, whether your technique is right or if you’re making progress. You show up, we take care of the programming and coaching, and you focus on training. Whether your goal is getting stronger, improving your conditioning, staying active as you age or simply feeling better in everyday life, there should always be a purpose behind what you’re doing.
The part of group training that I think gets overlooked the most, though, is the community that develops around it. As adults, life gets busy. Between careers, kids, family and everything else we have going on, it can become harder to find environments where you’re doing something positive for yourself while also connecting with other people. Training together creates that naturally. You start recognizing the same faces every week, celebrating each other’s progress, having conversations before class and usually sharing a few laughs along the way. Eventually, the people around you become another reason you want to show up. That’s the kind of environment we want to continue building at Connect — small groups, quality coaching, progressive training and a community where people genuinely enjoy being. Because the real power of group training isn’t one great workout. It’s creating an environment that helps you keep showing up, getting stronger and making training a sustainable part of your life for years to come.
